Worthy Advice To Avert Engine Failure

Techline and Willie's Workbench are my favorite parts of Four Wheeler. I look forward to each month's edition and always learn something. The reason I'm writing is that I haven't seen you address anything concerning proper engine break-in. It's too late for me. My engine builder put together a very nice small-block 383. After many frustrating hours of tuning, I finally got everything dialed in I thought. With less than 50 hours on the engine, it became impossible to tune. Engine teardown showed that half the cam lobes were nearly round, and all but two lifters had the crap beat out of them. My builder was able to save the crank, rods and pistons. The valves were okay as well. What could have done this I happened to pick up a copy of Mechanics Illustrated and In the tech column was a letter describing my symptoms exactly and a

Bernal removed the tailgate from the El Camino and set it up on a workbench to begin sanding. It was determined that the tailgate didn't suffer any rust, so Bernal could move on ahead and began to lay thin layers of Rage Gold filler to the panel. Working in a diagonal fashion, he started with 40-grit sandpaper and ended with 80-grit to eliminate any waves in the metal.

4x4s and metal, I bought an angle grinder because they are so darn useful. You can cut, shape, clean, notch, prep, and finish metal with a simple angle grinder and a handful of different wheels. In fact, when I was a kid I learned how to use my dad's bench grinder and was even caught cutting wood with that old grinder. Needless to say, Dad was not pleased.

First oft, great mag I look forward to my new issue every month. I just wanted to add a quick comment on your article Jeep Trail Tech Dana 30 Axleshatt Swap & Trail Safety (Dec. '10). It is not a bad idea to make sure you can separate your unit bearing from the knuckle before you snap a shaft on the trail. I would suggest that you check it when you are doing your next brake job. I live in the Great White Northeast, and in every unit bearing replacement I have done, the unit bearing rusts itself fast to the knuckle. Separating the two usually requiresa big hammer, a few chisels, and bunch of time. Since the unit bearing is such a tight fit in the knuckle, even a little rust can make removing it difficult. Better to spend a few hours on the driveway, where you have the time and the tools, than on the trail, where such things can be scarce. ADAM STELLA Plains, PA

Working on old bikes can be as frustrating as it is rewarding but wien you've given so many months of your free time to something and it's finally back on the road for first time in decades the end result may sometimes seem like something of an anti-climax once the initial euphoria wears off. After a protracted project it's entirely reasonable to want some time away from the work bench or your hobby can become a rod for your own back. Too much work makes Jack a dull boy etc. Spannering bikes is arguably a perverse < enjoy your leisure time but it's normally beneficial therapeutic cathartic - providing you've mapped out what you're trying to achiei Is the bike a daily rider, a rolling project, will it a potential show bike or perhaps just a cost effective project Krowing where you want to ge to from your current starting point is pivotal with any old bike. Sitting on the work bench right now is the engine of a bike that is currently stored in boxes around the garage. I've owned the...

Thanks To

Pictured is my latest toy a mini air die grinder. After a friend lent me his, I had to have one so I could remove two stubborn rivets hidden in the innards of a Vitesse door. They're designed to fix the clips to hold the door open on its restraint (an unusual arrangement for a routine job), and because the clips were completely trashed, the rivets had to go. This little goodie destroyed them in seconds, after chisels and drills failed.

The Best Buys

If you've been into cars for 'any length of time, it's impossible not to have collected a pile of helpful little parts like wire, rubber fuel line, tubing, clamps, and used bolts. The (dis)organization of any small parts collection is best exemplified by a large plastic bin that weighs about 186 pounds and sits under the workbench overflowing with rusty greasy mangled bolts of all sizes and descriptions. And, of course, the collection is fully integrated, meaning the metric bolts are mixed in with the standard fasteners, making selection even more challenging. And despite the

3 With the wire harnesses on a workbench, inspect them for damage and clean them. A sanitary install of complicated harnesses is impressive, so you might as well go the extra mile. Keep in mind that over the years some of the wire's protective covering may have become brittle and cracked. At this intersection of wires, the split plastic loom has separated and the factory electrical tape has worn away. The loom should not be installed without being repaired.

Auburn's ECTED Max locker is designed to fit the Dana 44 in the Wrangler TJ and in the JK. The JK's ring gear bolts are a slightly larger diameter, however, so the ring gear bolt holes in the ECTED needed to be enlarged. Here you can see the mounting surface being cleaned up with a grinding wheel after the holes had been enlarged using a drill press.

Inside the dark room, 011 a workbench, is a green ring. This is a 3,000 amp magnetic coil that magnetises ferrous metals. Each cog is sprayed with a fluorescent magnetic particle dye that soaks into any cracks on the gearbox component. Under an ultraviolet light, the luminous green ink instantly reveals where So far this weekend, the portable lab has already tested 160 components, mostly parts that were used at the last race and are being checked ahead of this weekend. In theory, anything on the car can be tested rear wings, front wings, the brackets holding the brake pedal, the gearbox casing, the spline drive from the gearbox, the whole cliff assembly, pinions, uprights on the suspension, steering columns, and steering arms. But those items that can't he magnetised, such as the carbon fibre front wing, can't be subjected to the luminous green magnetic dye test. In instances such as this, another expensive contraption inside the portable laboratory is used. Look around, and on...

My old hovel's transformation from a poorly lit, dingy and cold work space into a bright, warm and inviting shop is almost complete. Although I've yet to build my planned 18-foot wall-mounted work bench, carpenter pal Ken crafted a pair of eight-foot long by two-foot high portable benches stout enough to handle any bike I might haul home. Never mind that he needed a place to work on his Norton Commando, currently sitting on one of those benches .
