more road presence. However, this would eventually lead to the Colt's downfall. "The ST orange is impossible to panel match, so a full respray is required if any one panel is damaged," George explains. A minor incident in a car park left the Coll with just such damage, and due to the cost of a full respray, it was essentially a write-off. George eventually decided that, rather than repairing the Colt to its previous configuration, it was time to go all-out and fit the Evo engine he had always dreamed of.

Converting a front-wheel-drive car to four-wheel drive is a daunting task in anyone's book, and it's hard to imagine completing such a feat

■ MISSED OPPORTUNITY?

When you look at George's awesome Colt, it's hard not to wonder 'what might have been' if Mitsubishi had developed the SR4X Colt Evo for rallying. The Mitsubishi WRC team slipped into a gradual decline after its Group A Evo VI car was retired and it lost star driver Tommi Makkinen to Subaru in 2001. It's entirely possible that a 4WD Colt would have run the agile, short-wheelbase Peugeot 206 and Citroen Xsara WRCs much closer than the lacklustre Evo WRC did.

on your driveway! But with the rear floor removed, George and his friends set to work on mounting I lie suspension and 4WD system to ihe shorter wheelbase of the Colt. After many hours spent fiddling around with the subframe, floor and suspension cups, he was finally ready to fit the 2.0ltr 4G63T engine from an Kvo V, along with a shortened prop shaft.

With the wider track of the Lancer Evo drivetrain and the need to extend the front end to accommodate the intercooler, George had to return to the bodyshop in an effort to get everything looking right. The Coll and Lancer share a very similar chassis, so by shortening the Evo front bumper, George managed to bolt the bonnet and wings on to match. Although the slam panel also needed to be shortened because of the headlights, it was the rear arches that turned out to be the real headache. The styling options available for the Colts of this era are limited - the only wide-arch kit available was built in Germany by the now-defunct llalliart tuning and motors port preparation wing of Mitsubishi. They originally designed the kit for a Colt Evo concept car called the SR4X project, which would have seen an Evo Vl-engined Colt put into production. However, Mitsubishi canned the project at an early stage, but a few people were lucky enough to get hold of the kits and George managed to get his hands on a set of rear arches copied ip Interior is dominated by custom roll cage

Above Sourcing rear arches to match the front ones was vital from the original SR4X. Hundreds of man-hours went in to fitting them and then widening the front Evo wings to match before the ent ire car was sprayed a metallic Land Rover grey in preparation for iLs debut on the road.

Getting the car out on the open road made all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile; George was blown away by the power delivery and handling of his new creation. Whilst out enjoying a spirited drive in the Devon countryside, George found himself stuck behind five cars and a caravan. Knowing the road and knowing he had the machine to do it safely, he began to overtake the line of traffic in front of him. "After passing the first car I heard a bang!" he recalls. Pulling out

of the overtake and onto the side of the road, George discovered what he thought was gearbox oil and so phoned for his dad to trailer him home. Once onto the drive, he set about finding the cause of the oil leak, but it wasn't long before he found a fist-sized hole in the block, which told him everything he needed to know.

Rather than pay another couple of thousand pounds for a potentially dodgy secondhand engine, George decided it was time to get a properly built engine to complete this amazing project. Norris Designs are local to him and had the know-how to build a properly special engine for such a unique car. With road driving in mind, George settled on a 2.3ltr stroked engine and a target power figure of 700bhp. Three months later, the Coll rolled out of the Norris Designs garage and onto the streets for the first time. Mapped at 2.5bar, the Colt produced 728bhp on i)7RON fuel. "Because the engine ran so sweet and the standard gear ratios allowed it, the rev limit was increased too," says George. "I'm not sure what it was increased to, though, as I can't lake my eyes off the road!"

With plans to fit a dog-box in the future and potentially run over 900bhp on E85 ethanol fuel. George hopes to compete in the 30-130mph challenge this year - we're sure he'll claim a few scalps with this crazy-Colt Evolution.
