Who: Paul Adams Where: Torrance, California What: '03 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Engine: The long-block is the same as the day it rolled off the assembly line. Heads, cams, even the stock exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters are all still there. The key to this engine's power potential lies in the block and rotating assembly. All Mod motor blocks are a deep-skirt design with cross-bolted main bearing caps. The supercharged 32V engines in the '03 and '04 Cobras got a forged crank, Manley rods, and forged pistons in a boost-friendly 8.5:1 compression ratio. Boost: The stock Eaton Roots-style supercharger was designed for quiet operation and reliability over the lifetime of the car rather than ultimate power. Cobra owners usually replace them with a much more efficient screw-type supercharger. Paul's Whipple displaces 3.4 liters and delivers more than 24 pounds of boost. Fire hose fuel injectors are needed to keep up with all that additional air, so Paul replaced his with Ford Racing 60
lb/hr injectors. Longtime friend Derren Pruitt, owner of Quarter Master Racing in Whittier, California, handled the install. Danny Swanson of Swanson Performance tuned the ECM on his chassis dyno.
Exhaust: Believe it or not, the stock iron exhaust manifolds are still bolted to the heads. The restrictive-looking six-catalyst intermediate pipes are there as well. The only exhaust modification on Paul's car is a Bassani after-cat system.
Transmission: The stock T56 is still hanging in there.
Rearend: So is the stock rear. Though the Cobras has an independent rear suspension, the centersection is based on the tough, proven 8.8-inch rear. Suspension: It's all stock. Paul didn't mess with the tallish factory stance. You'd never know by looking at it that this car could smoke nearly any other car on the road today. Wheels/Tires: A pair of Nexan 275/40R17s are mounted up front. Hoosier 315/35R17 drag radials are out back, and all are mounted on the stock 17x8-inch wheels. END
