throughout the qualifying heats, Andy Scott burst to the front in the final and Superfinal stages of the second round of the British Rallycross Championship. Less than a year after his first Supercar start, he added his name to the list of series winners.
However, the Scot had not done nearly so well aboard the Peugeot 306 in round one, while points leader David Binks (Fiesta) was bumped from the Superfinal here in round two. SuperModified pacesetter Julian Godfrey, meanwhile, lifted his second class win of the year and featured in the Superfinal once again. The most consistent performer over the first two rounds, Fiesta-pedaller Godfrey now leads the points table.
On a high after round one, Binks shone at a murky Knockhill and set fastest times in each of the first two heats to claim his first BRC A-Final pole. Title holder Pat Doran set BTD in the third heat and started the A-Final from the middle of the front row. Doran's Fiesta got to the first corner ahead of the pack but immediately spun. Binks came to a halt in the following confusion. Scott grabbed the lead and was almost back to the scene of the incident before Binks coaxed his car into life and rejoined the race.
Scott ran out the clear winner ahead of Doran and Andy Grant (Focus). Lawrence Gibson took fourth in his Metro, having run into the rear of Steve Hill's Lancer in the second heat. Hill had suffered transmission failure that left Gibson with nowhere to go. Gareth Wood, Simon Horton and Brian Jukes were next, with Binks last.
Godfrey passed Ian O'Connell's Lotus and then Mike Howlin's leading rear-drive Fiesta to take SuperModified A-Final honours. Thanks to the Supercar Final chaos, Godfrey and Howlin were fast enough for the top-eight Superfinal, tipping Binks out of the race and off the top of the points.
Come the main event, Scott was challenged by Grant at the first corner, but held steady. The Peugeot driver then put in a fine run across the roller coaster gravel section to end the first lap with a race-winning margin. Grant played things safe, settling for his best BRC finish by bringing his Ford Focus home second, ahead of Wood who made the most of the conditions to take a fantastic third in his budget Impreza. Doran spun at Turn 1 again, this time climbing back up the order to finish fourth. Godfrey took fifth, and the championship lead.
The Suzuki Swift event was won by Liam Doran, who got the measure of round-one winner Dave Bellerby. The RX150 field was boosted by ex-British champ Ollie O'Donovan, who led home Leo Forster. ■ By Tim Whittington
