Another Frontera

Dear 4x4 Mart

It was good to read Hugh Withalls letter in your Winter issue, saying how much he liked his old Frontera and was thinking of buying another as a weekend off-roader. I'm also a fan of the much-maligned Frontera - so much so, I own two of the things!

My off-road hack is a '95 Frontera Sport - sadly, it's a petrol model, so isn't the most economical off-roader around. But as I use it only for fun, it doesn't cover that many miles, so the fuel bill isn't too horrendous. All I've done to it is fit some off-road tyres (the transformation was incredible!) and an engine snorkel - and that's it. I've not bothered spending any cash on raising the suspension, as the ground clearance is fine for what I need.

I've been to plenty of off-road days in the 18 months I've owned my old Fronty, and have had great fun. Tt's never got stuck (yet...), has never let me down and has even managed to keep up with some seriously modded Defenders on occasions. For me, as someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a weekend 'toy', I can't think of anything better. And as it's mechanically straightforward, I can even carry out my own servicing and maintenance.

My other Frontera is the family car: a 2.2 DTi five-door from 2002. And I'll agree with Hugh when he says the Mk TT Frontera was a big improvement over the Mk I - I'd say my five-door model is as good as any of its rivals, yet cost me a lot less than the equivalent Terrano or Shogun. It's fairly refined, it's pretty well built, it's economical, it's big enough for the family and it tows our four-berth caravan with no effort at all. I think more people should give the Fioiilera a chance, as it's a far better vehicle than its reputation suggests.
