Every year, usually in November the Specialty Equipment Market Association otherwise known as SEMA, puts on its annual Expo at the sprawling Las Vegas Convention Center smack dab in the middle of Sin City. Since 1963, SEMA has presented those in the business of accessorising vehicles a chance to show their wares to the movers and shakers in the industry, as well as provide a good excuse for building some tricked out vehicles and engage in social gatherings.
For tuners and performance thrill seekers, the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association or SEMA may take the proverbial cake for the American tuner scene, but the glamour at the Las Vegas exposition isn't the only tuner show in the world that attracts the aficionados. In January, all-eyes headed to Japan the where the relatively smaller but colourful Tokyo Auto Salon beckoned the finest domestic and import stock and specialists. The show clearly belonged to Toyota and Honda which had a wide variety of cars on display under various labels and divisions and an array of independents with their interpretations engineering and design skills, from mild sports accoutrements to the wilder fringes of auto design.
Hyundai will showcase the luxurious Equus sedan, fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive Sonata Turbo, and the rear-wheel drive, performance-oriented Genesis Coupe, at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show Nov. 2-5, 2010. Hyundai has again united with some of the biggest names in the aftermarket industry to build six one-of-a-kind models for the Hyundai display at SEMA (booth 24387) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
In 1992, Sal attended the Lowrider Magazine Las Vegas Super Show, and placed second in the Truck of the Year category, right behind Wrapped with Envy. During that time, mini-trucks were heavily competing and competition was getting out of hand with mini-trucks having bed lifts and major body modifications, which were unable to be achieved on the body of a Bomb. You can't chop up a bomb in that nature, explains Sal Sierra III, who wanted to compete in the Bomb of the Year category. After the '92 Super Show, the truck was taken to then fellow Imperial club member, Hanco, out of Ventura, CA., to get some paint work done. They also sent ii over to Leroy and Kenny Gonzales who also worked their magic on the custom. Following the Las Vegas Super Show, Sal Sierra II met up with Leroy Gonzales, who at the time was a judge for Lowrider Magazine, and came up with the idea of having a Truck Bomb of the Year category.

The highly anticipated start of the 2010 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Season is now in the books. After several months of hard work by both Stronghold Motorsports and Sean Geiser Racing, the 2010 Team ReadyLift Racing program was finally ready for a dirt-churning battle and a solid leap towards 2010 championships. Originally poised for competition at the popular Lake Elsinore track, Lucas officials had to make a last-minute venue change for the first race weekend of the year. Recent weather events made the Lake Elsinore track unusable and in just a few short weeks Tony Vanillo and his Lucas Oil crew developed a brand new one-mile off-road course inside the Las Vegas Motor Speedway compound. The new track that most drivers had never even seen before presented a lot of challenges and proved to be a highly technical course.
Don chose the same colors for the Inside that Super Stripes used on the outside, as Fat Boy Customs In Las Vegas, Nevada, used black leather and orange and silver suede to wrap the factory seats and interior. Leather and suede also found its way onto the custom sub enclosure that Don built to house a barrage of Soundstream audio components. For some chest-thumping bass, four Soundstream Tarantula TSQ-124 12-inch square subs point out of the rear hatch and are powered by two Soundstream Tarantula 1000D 1-channel, 1,000-watt amps. Mounted behind the subs, some 300 LED lights turn the subs into glowing afterburners once the sun goes down. To guarantee that the mids and highs come through crystal-clear, twelve Soundstream XT653S 6 -inch three-way speakers are mounted in the Excursion's doors and are powered by two Tarantula 4.420 four-channel 420-watt amps. Garage where the original Cannonballers first hit the gas 40 years ago. We're looking at 36 hours straight, with a detour to Brock Yates Snr's home in Wyoming, NY. Then it's go west, young men, stopping at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and across to Las Vegas via Kansas, Colorado, Utah and then Nevada, finally rocking up at Redondo Beach in Los Angeles, just as Brock Yates Jnr did with his pa all those years back. Total 4126 miles. Sheesh.
But a new inspiration came to him after a visit to the Las Vegas Super Show. Ray's journey to his latest project came about after he laid eyes upon the first '96 Cadillac Fleetwood that was given a two-door conversion by Topo. After Ray saw the car at the LowriderVegas Super Show back in '07, he knew that he wanted one just like it. After a few years, he found out that the car's owner had it for sale. He worked out a deal with the owner and he purchased the car, which was already in perfect shape.

Thus you'll not be surprised that I've also been interested in Chevrolet's Project Driveway, in which 100 fuel-cell Equinoxes in private hands have now accumulated more than 700,000 miles around Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. The reason for these three geographical regions, of course, is that the Hydrogen Highway has yet to extend across this vast continent of ours. Some observations on this One kg of hydrogen is energy-equivalent to a gallon of gasoline, and a standard Equinox driver would be ecstatic with 40 mpg especially while trouncing unsuspecting BMWs. Having been converted from a pile of rust in Modesto, into a certifi ed show-stopper in Las Vegas, this garage-built '51 Chevy out of San Jose, CA took Lowrider builds to a whole new plateau. I never thought that it would go to this level, says Henry Palacios, owner of SJ Trokita. Henry and a few close friends spent countless nights in the garage assembling this one-of-a-kind Chevy. The crew fi nished the truck just in time to take it to the LRM-sanctioned show in Pueblo, Colorado, where they were able to qualify for the Las Vegas Super Show. The trip to Colorado, and the atmosphere there was awesome, expressed Henry, as he told me about the 29-hour road trip east. It was a real blessing to have been able to go to Colorado and make it back, says Henry.

Though everyone seems to think the economy is dead, we're here to say that the aftermarket is alive and kicking. Manufacturers are still making cool stuff for every make and model 4x4 out there, and dealers are still signing up to carry these wares at a 4x4 shop near you, so get out there and do your part to help the economy.
The Goldrush Rally's inaugural event, held in 2009, was conceived as an event to bring L4P members together to enjoy their passions on the road and in luxurious venues in San Fransisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This past June, GR2KX expanded to 5 cities, kicking off in Seattle with a party stop in Portland, Oregon before the SF, LA and LV stops. The Chevrolet Camaro has been named the hottest car at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The inaugural Award recognises the most accessory friendly new models, based on the number of vehicles exhibited at the show. The Specialty Equipment Market Association or SEMA as it is known, is the premier automotive specialty products trade show in the world. More than 1,500 new accessory items were launched this year alone from 1,900 exhibitors.
In the July, Aug., and Sept. '10 issues of HOT ROD, we dragged cur old 70 Super Bee out of storage and started its revival as a more streetable drag car than it was in the mid-'90s. We've weathered some setbacks on parts deliveries, but the project is still moving ahead in the new HOT ROD shop. With this being the case, our latest Project T-top Coupe tech venture comes nearly one year after our experience at the PSCA's Street Car Super Nationals V in Las Vegas a bad experience, jnfor-tunately, but one that has brought about a new commitment to making the over-achieving coupe even better than it was.
Anthony's reputation for high quality builds, his replication of Joe Ray's Las Vegas car would also garner him quite a bit of attention. The build quality and attention to detail in that build is still unrivaled today. Completion of this legendary model took David Anthony three years to complete after countless hours of research. The model car publications took notice of his work and featured Highlander '64 as a cover feature. In fact, he had three covers of Lowrider Bicycle with his Lowrider models. He also had cover features with a truck based on Punch '84, as well as his replica of Joe Ray's Las Vegas car, which was subsequently featured on the cover of Model Car Magazine. David Anthony even contributed tech articles to Lowrider Bicycle magazine.
VW was keenest to appeal to US buyers, though. It has struggled there in recentyears, but is bouncing back with a Passat designed specifically for the States - and built there, too. It's a big gamble, but the prize is to sell a million cars in the US within a decade, and to be the world's top car maker you must conquer America.
It was especially nice to see Suzuki emerge from its defensive bunker status of '10 (American Suzuki chose to only import a few off-road models last year in order to help clear unsold inventory, and like many other OEMs, did not hold sn annual dealer meeting) with a much more optimistic attitude at its 'II dealer meeting in Las Vegas. While still a bit more subdued than years past when bike sales were climbing at healthy rates and confidence was dripping from every participant's breath, there seemed to be an air of relief and guarded enthusiasm among the dealers present at this year's convention. Suzuki even brought in an economist to give an explanation of he finan ai system's health, and why most experts are saying the economy is rebounding yet job growth is slower to recover (a story that's too long for this column).

Series boss Randy Bernard revealed last week that any driver from outside of IndyCar who can win the final race of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 16 will win the 5m bounty. The Radical Car Class provided an interesting contest as it had Las Vegas hopper Ron Eggers of team Black Magic pitted against his old hopper, a car that was purchased and operated by Denver local Adam Decker. Black Magic brought out their '87 Monte Carlo, while Adam Decker brought out the car formerly owned by Ron, a 1964 Impala. In the end, local Adam Decker won on a technicality, as Ron's Monte Carlo got stuck ending its hydraulic run.

Actually, for the most part, the F-250 handled this load like it wasn't there. Clearly, there was plenty of power. Our test route took us up the 4190-foot Cajon Pass, a section of Interstate 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas known for wind and heat. It's a long pass, with heavily trafficked truck lanes. We towed at a steady 60-65 mph into high-profile truck wind warnings. On those occasions when we had to make way for a big-rig to pass a slow-moving trailer, the 6.4 still had enough guts to regain speed, just by feeding in some throttle. The temp gauges never budged, with outside temperatures over 82 degrees. The Super Duty has no fewer than five coolers stacked in front of the engine, so we suspect the engine and trans could be worked hard in far hotter conditions without undue concern. The owner's manual recommends going to a 15-40 oil if you'll be towing a lot in very hot conditions. This seems a rational precaution.

Jason Thomas started the 2009 season with a broken leg from the U.S. Open in November (so, he actually didn't start at the begining of the season). Fortunately, he was able to come back halfway through the Supercross season and notched a top-ten finish at the final round in Las Vegas. Once a year, automotive enthusiasts and media outlets from all over the world congregate in Las Vegas for the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. Some come for the shimmering lights and the chance to meet their favorite personalities, while others, like us, are there to check out the latest products for our street and strip machines.
Interestingly, this Cobra's connection to Max Balchowsky doesn't stop there. We've already learned how Old Yel.er II appeared in Viva Las Vegas, and Ernie's Cobra also had a brief film career - most notably racing against Herbie, a VW fitted with a Porsche motor in The Love Bug.
Brian and I built the 440 using a popular 496 stroker kit that included Ross flat-top pistons yielding an advertised 10.5 1 compression ratio. I went with Edelbrock aluminum heads and a Tremec five-speed to ensure a streetable combination on 91-octane California gas. The problem is, I experience detonation at full-throttle even on cool days. The engine coolant temperature is around 190 and the total timing is 32 degrees. The MSD distributor currently has the light spring installed, which brings all the timing in by 2,100 rpm. The initial timing is at 16 degrees. I checked the cranking cylinder pressure on a cold engine at 210 psi on several cylinders. I have tried the heavier advance spring in the MSD distributor that brings all the timing in later at 3,500 rpm, and this reduces knock to almost nothing. However, with the heavy spring, the car was 0.18 second slower I (11.79) at Las Vegas, but trap speed was E 2 mph higher at 120. For the next race, I changed to a lighter advance...
