WITH its introduction to the South African new vehicle market, the second-generation Santa Fe signalled Hyundai's intention to compete with premium marques in the full-sized SUV segment in terms of quality and overall value, rather than just price. Since then, the buying public has awakened and warmed to Hyundai's push to the front, especially with products such as the ix35 and new Sonata.

Meanwhile, the Santa Fe has solidified its position in its segment.

With the introduction of the impressive R2.2 turbodiesel engine (see sidebar) for the 2011 model year, in conjunction with specification upgrades and a slimmer product line-up, Hyundai's lifestyle-oriented SUV is primed to flourish in a recovering market in which emissions taxation has brought the need for good fuel efficiency to the forefront.
