unit. Even the distaff commented on the strength of the ASX diesel - a miracle! - and I duly noted the time and date as a turning point in our relationship. That said, the RAV4 engine is more refined at idle. Both are civil on the go, once they are warm.

Dynamically, this is an even harder call, but probably the Mitsi by a jetfighting nose, although the RAV4 offers better overall ride quality. The slightly lower-flying ASX is a touch firmer, and with its fractionally better grip limits, it is a bit more up for a serve than the RAV4. While artificial in its weighting and with a tendency to snap back to centre, its electric steering is a bit more talkative, and adjustable at the grip limit.

The extra front push you might expect in the RAV4 as a result of its rubber is countered by a more even weight distribution. On smooth seal, the RAV4 slides and squeals more readily into ESP intervention, the onset of which is signalled by odious bleeping. This is less annoying, however, than the beeps that accompany each and every use of the ASX's indicators. We searched submenus for the cancel option but to no avail. Other ASX variants mercifully miss out on this feature.

Overall, one could be described as a touch more car-like than the other, and that's the vehicle that actually looks more like a car - or a wagon, at any rate. Even the way you sit at the wheel supports this impression of the ASX. The RAV4 counters with plusher seats and a more absorbent ride, in part due to its higher-profile tyres.

The RAV4 may look the larger vehicle but inside, the two are spatially similar. Mitsubishi rates luggage space amongst the best in class, with 384 litres in the 4WD models with a full spare, and 1158 when the rear seats are folded flat. A high floor in the ASX makes loading easier. But the RAVs hold is a bit larger, at 450L, expanding to 1469L. There's little between them for passenger space. The Toyota plastics are nicer, and the cabin is finished a little better, but the ASX is a step up on the Outlander for both component quality and sound insulation. So if you like stick shift and diesels, the decision between these two rests fundamentally on style and space. PC
