The Heat Shield Project

It may seem odd given the nature of our business, but when we can, we apply every bit of modern technology to our development projects. In this case, Solidworks (and Collin's talent) converted piles of notes, photographs, sketches, samples and patterns into a state-of-the-art set of engineering drawings. That in turn enabled us to have the panels cut by computer-controlled machines, which guarantees consistent fit and accuracy. Anyone who has fabricated a set of these panels with saw, router and hole saw will appreciate the difference. Below are the Solidworks models of our new kits. Snow Wheeling Canadastyii

The other thing we learned on our trip is that while snow wheeling in Canada, you eat a lot. Every 30 minutes or so the big-block powerplants would heat up from snow bashing and we would stop and let them cool, which was a perfect time to dig into some manifold burritos and bumper barbecue. Of course, eating feeds your inner engine, helping to keep you warm while you're tromping through the white stuff taking pictures, so we didn't complain even when a can of warm sardines was passed around. We can't wait for our next trip to the hinterland. If you go, don't forget a fork.

The search began to trace a green and yellow tractor and after some considerable time Ronnie heard of a suitable tractor, a very early 1960s John Deere Lanz D6516 DT, and contacted the owner who sent a picture describing the machine as complete and in good running order. I bought the tractor on sight of the picture, said Ronnie, but when it arrived, sadly its condition was far from as had been described and shown in the photographs. A complete nut and bolt restoration began to return the Lanz to its original condition.

Stirling Moss wrote to me the other day and I keep all of his letters. He's my real hero. I even have the envelope that he sent me with photographs in back when I was in school aged 14. Now, of course, we're really good mates and see each other for dinner about twice a week when he's out here. that he has becomea close friend of hischildhood hero and the man whom he entered motor sport to emulate. And that's what makes Bell such a nice bloke he still retains his teenage passion and enthusiasm for the sport, and he genuinely likes people. He doesn't seem to have a bad word to say about anyone. Either that or, like the true gentleman he undoubtedly is. he keeps his less flattering opinions to himself. He still has that car today, and it has never needed restoration, but his appreciation for the model has led to the acquisition and restoration of a number of other Challengers.

And do you have to underline the photo captions Our eyes are apparently good enough to see the line that separates the tiny thumbnail photographs, but we cannot see the words typed on there Jury is definitely still out.

Did Engine

I thought somebody would have commented by now. I believe the engine in that abandoned '43 GPW on page 32 of your great Supersonic DED article (Oct. '10) is the rarely seen F-head Jeep six from the mid to late '50s. I last saw one in an FC longbed pickup about 20 years ago, if memory hasn't failed. I started working on rigs in 1958 and only retired this year. I remember those being a real bugger to adjust the exhaust valves. I still collect white elephants, like an AMC Eagle wagon and my booney basher '71IHC1200 TravelAII, well eguipped for the desert but a work in progress. I'll send pics when I get a digital camera. In January, we posted a blog on www.popularhotrodding. com asking PHR readers to be a part of our August issue. My, how time flies. Next month will be devoted entirely to your project cars, so keep an eye out on the newsstand. As you may remember, we sent the call out to everyone with a muscle car project in progress, and promised that we'd make room in the August issue for every single car. We asked for you to follow a few simple rules, like take quality digital photos and provide all necessary info, and you'd see yourself in print guaranteed. We also announced the reader project issue in the Bangin' Gears editorial column of the April issue, and as a result, we got 124 total entries by the April 1 cutoff deadline. Slk Plays Safe

Mercedes will officially unveil the third-generation version of its smallest roadster at the Geneva motor show in March. Reaction to early press photographs suggests the reception may well be mixed. The new SLK uses the new nose style pioneered by the SLS (and more recently seen on the CLS), though that isn't enough to dispel the impression that Mercedes has played it safe.

I'm really disappointed in the Shelby GT350. Take a close look at the photographs.The rear lower panel looks like it was pasted on with bubble gum.There's a gap between it and the rest of the body. The rear-quarter windows look like a piece of plastic was pasted on with Bondo. Where's the original look of this car It's supposed to give us a modern look of the old style. Many art lovers attending the Art Basel Miami Beach last December also enjoyed the convenience and comfort of a fleet of BMW 7 Series Sedans. In today's modern world where everyone thinks they're an instant professional photographer after buying a digital camera, it's a lot harder to make your photos stand out from the pack. Shoot as much as humanly possible at a wide range of subjects and lighting conditions, try photo-sharing websites like flickr, or start a photo blog site through the likes of tumblr or blogspot, and regularly add new pics. Or, if you get a banger from a local club race or of a local FMX rider, don't be afraid to submit it to your local paper and see if they can give you some exposure. It can take a while to get your name out there, but if your photos are a cut above the rest people will remember you. Remember- all the world's best photographers were once in your shoes.

E're taking pictures of Don Ruder's smart black Mini Pick-up when a huge American Ford truck rolls up. The US is the land of the Pick-up. but it's pretty surreal to see these two extreme interpretations of the same basic principle sitting side-by-side, with the Mini's roof barely making it past the Ford's wheelarch line. The Ford driver winds down his window and asks, Did they make them like that Yes, the factory did make a Mini Pick-up, we explain. But the answer also has to be no. because Don's put so many personal touches on his Pick-up that there's hardly anything still as it was when the car left Longbridge

'I try not to get too upset with fans who may jump into my shot. But I will protect my shot. Sometimes the novices will come and jump in front of you and take pictures. You have to earn your stripes.' IF YOU SHOOT CRAP, YOU HAVE TO EDIT CRAP. I tend to shoot 200 to 300 photos in a day, which is a lot less than most. Some guys will shoot 2 000, but then you have to edit all those. Focus on taking quality shots, not quantity. KNOW YOUR SUBJECTS. Once you get to know the riders, taking pictures of them doesn't seem as obtrusive. Once the riders get to know you, they relax when you're pushing a lens in their face.

Classic Truck Trends

Recently I celebrated my 12th anniversary with Truckin' magazine. During my dozen years as the Senior Tech Editor, I have worn out three computers, four keyboards, three cameras, and four editors. Over my marathon run, I have averaged roughly twenty-five pages per month during our thirteen issues per year for twelve years, that all calculates out to some 3,900 pages I have written.
